Samantha Wipff

Cyclist

Samantha Wipff moved to Austin from a small town in Southeast Texas in 2009. She graduated from the University of Texas, where she studied philosophy and education. Samantha discovered her passion for bikes and biking while working at Jimmy Johns during college. She bought her first bike, a fixed-gear with a flip-flop hub, in 2011. With the new bike, she started delivering for Jimmy Johns in downtown Austin.

After pushing through several long fixed-gear rides, Samantha decided to sell her car to buy her first road bike.

With her new bike, she quickly discovered her love of climbing hills. She spent three years just riding for fun and climbing Austin’s hardest hills. Eventually, Samantha was intrigued with cyclocross and wanted to give racing a try.  She started competing in the local series, Dirt Derby, where the race takes place on a motocross track. Then, when road season came, Samantha lined up with her 9-speed steel bike and fell in love with road racing. Samantha joined Phenom shortly after she started racing and will be representing the team for her third season in 2018.

She won second place at the state road race championship in her first year racing.

Samantha then followed up that accomplishment by taking first place in the Driveway Series during her second year of racing. She also got the chance to return to her fixie roots when the Red Bull Last Stand came to Texas (with a women’s field for the first time) in 2016.

Looking forward, Samantha will be racing fixed gears for State Bicycle Co. and targeting the Red Hook Crit series in 2018.
