Triathlete and Ironman
Witold (Witek) is a neuroscience researcher at the University of Pittsburgh Neurosurgery Department. There he studies and researches how the human brain functions to produce actions such as limb movement and speech. When he is not working in the lab, Witek spends his time training and racing in the sport that has become a cornerstone in his life – triathlons.
Witek first became interested in swimming, biking, and running about fifteen years ago. While living the dream life as a fresh college graduate on the Big Island of Hawaii, triathlons became a staple. Working as a manager on a small coffee farm, he used his free time to explore the tropical paradise. Witek was provided the luxury of swimming in the ocean, biking up volcano mountains, and running on lava fields in perfect year-round conditions.
Witek even got to volunteer at the 2001 Ironman World Championship, only a few miles from where he lived.
Little did he know then that this sport would capture his imagination the way it did over the next decade. Shortly after he moved there for graduate school, he began competing in small triathlon races around the Pittsburgh area.
However, it wasn’t until recent that Witek seriously started training and travelling the world to race in long-course triathlons. Last year was the first time he qualified for and competed in the World Championship. For him going back to where his journey began was remarkably special. This season, Witek’s goal is all about going back.
Witek is passionate about sports, the outdoors, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He is also passionate about great food, not to mention chocolate!
Witek is very active in the local Pittsburgh triathlon community, and around the world in triathlon competition and travel.
